Notes:

Globalization and diversity are the rules today, and professionals must be positioned to meet the challenges – and enjoy the benefits – of interacting successfully with clients and colleagues from different cultures. Transcultural competence is the ability to adapt to sociocultural settings anywhere in the world, domestically or internationally, with or without prior knowledge of the cultural orientations of the people and societies one is encountering. The concepts Glover and Friedman delineate and the applications, assessment tools, and intervention approaches they provide in this cutting-edge book draw on case studies that illustrate commonly encountered cultural dilemmas in a variety of practice areas. The framework offered herein is formulated to be immediately practicable for consulting and organizational psychologists and a range of other individual consultants and community leaders as well as organizations. The explanation of cultural traps associated with subtle ethnocentric assumptions, and the strategies given for avoiding them, make Transcultural Competence: Navigating Cultural Differences in the Global Community an invaluable resource. Using both historical and contemporary examples, Glover and Friedman present clear rules for identifying these traps and instruct readers on how best to find exits and solutions in order to thrive in our global era — Provided by publisher.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 153-156) and index.

Almost everything we do is based on our knowledge of the world around us: how we dress in the morning, how we go about our work, how we interact with other people – all these things rest on our understanding of how we know life. Knowledge might be seen as the most central as well as the most under-researched trait of social life: we mainly think of knowledge as either technical (scientific knowledge) or formal (as bestowed by academic education). The things that we know are obscured in our everyday routines, not revealing their true status as known – until critical moments demand it. This book establishes a fundamentally social understanding of knowledge. –back cover.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 129-143) and index.

Are poverty, misery, famine, disease and war inevitably part of the human condition? Will the creations of science become uncontrollable and socially dangerous, like Frankenstein’s monster? Or can science and education create a world of material plenty – a war-free world, where the benevolent, creative and intellectual sides of human nature will have a chance to flourish?

This book tries to answer these questions by tracing the history of a debate which took place among the economists, political philosophers and writers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It was a debate in which the Utopian vision of optimists such as the Marquis de Condorcet and William Godwin was opposed by Thomas Robert Malthus and others, who believed that the benefits of scientific progress would inevitably be nullified by the growth of the global population.

This book follows that debate, which also involved people such as Burke, Paine, Wollstonecraft, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron, Ricardo, Mill and Darwin. In the final chapter, the question of who was right is examined from the vantage-point of our own times, while particular attention is given to the close connection between population pressure and war.
