Many social workers find themselves in management positions within a few years of graduating from MSW programs. Most of these jobs are in nonprofit human service organizations in which, increasingly, business acumen is necessary to maintain grants and donations, start new programs, market services to clients, supervise the finance function, and understand the external environment. This book teaches MSW students and early-stage social work management practitioners the essential business skills needed to manage programs and organizations to improve their overall management toolkit for finding a better job or getting promoted and, ultimately, to gain parity with other managers holding MBA degrees and working in the human service space. This text can serve as a desk reference for managers to troubleshoot various situations. It is also appropriate for social work macro practice courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as courses that cover human resource management and financial management. — Provided by publisher.

Globalization and diversity are the rules today, and professionals must be positioned to meet the challenges – and enjoy the benefits – of interacting successfully with clients and colleagues from different cultures. Transcultural competence is the ability to adapt to sociocultural settings anywhere in the world, domestically or internationally, with or without prior knowledge of the cultural orientations of the people and societies one is encountering. The concepts Glover and Friedman delineate and the applications, assessment tools, and intervention approaches they provide in this cutting-edge book draw on case studies that illustrate commonly encountered cultural dilemmas in a variety of practice areas. The framework offered herein is formulated to be immediately practicable for consulting and organizational psychologists and a range of other individual consultants and community leaders as well as organizations. The explanation of cultural traps associated with subtle ethnocentric assumptions, and the strategies given for avoiding them, make Transcultural Competence: Navigating Cultural Differences in the Global Community an invaluable resource. Using both historical and contemporary examples, Glover and Friedman present clear rules for identifying these traps and instruct readers on how best to find exits and solutions in order to thrive in our global era — Provided by publisher.

From the publisher. A widely adopted practitioner resource and course text, this book shows how to apply knowledge about behavior change in general — and the stages-of-change model in particular — to make substance abuse treatment more effective. The authors are leaders in the field who describe ways to tailor interventions for clients with varying levels of motivation or readiness to change. They draw on cutting-edge theory and research to explain what works (and what doesn’t work) at different stages of change. Rich clinical examples illustrate the whats, whys, and how-tos of using the stages-of-change model to inform treatment planning and intervention for individuals, groups, couples, and families. New to this edition: reflects the ongoing development of the stages-of-change model and research advances over the past decade chapter on stage-based brief interventions in health care, social service, and community settings group treatment chapter has been significantly revised expanded coverage of the change processes relevant to each stage.

Title from title frames.

Originally produced by New Day Films in 2010.

Old People Driving chronicles the adventures of Milton (age 96) and Herbert (age 99) as they confront the end of their driving years. Viewers join Herbert as he takes his last drive, hands over his keys, and comes to terms with the reality of life without a car. Milton, meanwhile, continues to drive every day and vows to do so until he feels he’s no longer safe on the road. Through their stories, and a review of the latest traffic safety research, Old People Driving dispels some of the myths about elderly drivers without shying away from the fact that many people will outlive their ability to drive safely. Old People Driving puts a human face on the tremendously important issue of senior drivers. I recommend it for anyone seeking to help students understand the important and complex issues that surround aging. – Erika Falk, Psy.D., Director, Geriatric Assessment and Psychological Services, Institute on Aging
