Notes:

Keita Ali is on the run. He is desperate to flee Zantoroland, a mountainous black island that produces the fastest marathoners in the world. Keita signs on with notorious marathon agent Anton Hamm, who provides Keita with a chance to run the Boston marathon in return for a huge cut of the winning purse. But when Keita fails to place among the top finishers, rather than being sent back to his own country, he goes into hiding in Freedom State a wealthy nation that has elected a government bent on deporting the refugees living within its borders in the community of AfricTown. Keita can be safe only if he keeps moving and eludes Hamm and the officials who would deport him to his own country, where he will face almost certain death. This is the new underground. A place where tens of thousands of people deemed to be illegal live below the radar of the police and government officials. As Keita surfaces from time to time to earn cash prizes by running local road races, he has to assess whether the people he meets are friends or enemies: John Falconer, a gifted student intent on making a documentary about AfricTown Ivernia Beech, an elderly woman who is at risk of being forced into an assisted living facility Rocco Stanton, a recreational marathoner who is the Immigration Minister Lula DiStefano, self-declared Queen of AfricTown and Madame of the community s infamous brothel and Viola Hill, one of the only black reporters in the country, who is investigating the possibility of corruption linking the highest officials in Freedom State and Zantoroland. Keita s very existence in Freedom State is illegal. As he trains in secret, eluding capture, the stakes keep getting higher. Soon, he is running not only for his life, but his sister s life, too. Fast-moving and compelling, The Illegal is a literary thriller that addresses the fate of undocumented refugees who struggle to survive in nations that do not want them.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 182-197) and index.

New Labour, new voicescapes, 1997-2007 — Giddensian mediation : voices in writing, representation, and actor training — Migration and materialism : David Greig, Gregory Burke, and sounding Scottish in post-devolutionary voicescapes — Vocalising allegiance : Kwame Kwei-Armah, Roy Williams, and debbie tucker green — Sending up citizenship : young voices in Tanika Gupta, Mark Ravenhill, and Enda Walsh — Women who kill children : mistrusting mothers in the work of Deborah Warner and Fiona Shaw, Beatrix Campbell and Judith Jones, and Dennis Kelly — Betrayal and beyond.

Voice and New Writing, 1997-2007 uses the voice as a focus for critical enquiry. It explores new writing theatres’ claims to ‘find’ and to represent previously marginalised voices during Tony Blair’s decade as Prime Minister. Hearing ‘cultural evidence’ for what Raymond Williams termed ‘structures of feeling’ in the articulation of identities, Maggie Inchley attends to the negotiation of accepted etiquettes of articulation and audibility through processes used in writing, voice training and performance. In the voices of theatre this book hears the narrative of betrayal around Anthony Giddens’ ‘promise of democracy’, and an embattled belief in both transparency and dialogue as necessary conditions of representation.–Provided by publisher

Includes bibliographical references (pages 197-208) and index.

The nature of Africa — The nature of African environmentalism — The nature of justice — The nature of violence.

Engaging important discussions about social conflict, environmental change, and imperialism in Africa, Different Shades of Green points to legacies of African environmental writing, often neglected as a result of critical perspectives shaped by dominant Western conceptions of nature and environmentalism. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework employing postcolonial studies, political ecology, environmental history, and writing by African environmental activists, Byron Caminero-Santangelo emphasizes connections within African environmental literature, highlighting how African writers have challenged unjust, ecologically destructive forms of imperial development and resource extraction. Different Shades of Green also brings into dialogue a wide range of African creative writing–including works by Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Bessie Head, Nadine Gordimer, Zakes Mda, Nuruddin Farah, Wangari Maathai, and Ken Saro-Wiwa–in order to explore vexing questions for those involved in the struggle for environmental justice, in the study of political ecology, and in the environmental humanities, urging continued imaginative thinking in effecting a more equitable, sustainable future in Africa. –Publisher’s website.
