Hundreds of Palestinian villages were left empty across Israel when their residents became refugees after the 1948 war. Most of these villages were razed by the new State of Israel, their lands and property confiscated, but in dozens of others, communities of Jews were settled–many refugees in their own right. The state embarked upon a systematic effort of renaming and remaking the landscape, and the Arab presence was erased from official maps and histories. While most Israelis are familiar with the walls, ruins, and gardens that mark these sites today–almost half are located within tourist areas or national parks–they are unaware that Arab communities existed there within living memory. Using official documents, kibbutz publications, and visits to the former village sites, Noga Kadman reconstructs this history of erasure for all 418 depopulated villages. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and contemporary Israeli society –Provided by publisher.

Introduction: Margin and mainstream in the American radical experience — War and peace, 1939-1948 — All over this land, 1949-1959 — A new Left, 1960-1964 — The revolution will be live, 1965-1973 — Anticipation, 1973-1980 — Over the rainbow, 1981-1989 — What democracy looks like, 1990 to the present — Conclusion: Radicalism’s future.

Radicals in America offers the first complete and continuous history of left-wing social movements in the United States from the Second World War to the present. The book traces the full panoply of radical activist causes–socialism, Communism, the labor movement, anarchism, pacifism, anti-racism, women’s rights, LGBT liberation, ecology, indigenous rights, and world social justice–in ways that show how successive generations join currents of dissent, face setbacks and political repression, and generate new challenges to the status quo, even in periods when conservatism appears to push protest to the margins of American society — Provided by publisher.

Introduction: inspiration from stories — Reclaiming wholeness: the LGBTQ movement — Grounded in community: the fight for the soul of public education — Transforming visions: ending mass incarceration — The power of stories: the dreamers and immigrant rights — When we fight, we win! : the struggle for economic power — Environmental warriors: going to the root of the problem — Epilogue: solidarity–a gathering — Afterword: stories of love and fury / Antonia Darder.

Same-sex marriage, #BlackLivesMatter, the Dream Act, the People’s Climate March, End the New Jim Crow, Occupy Wall Street–these are just a few of the initiatives that have taken flight in the past decade, the most fertile and productive era of activism and reform this country has seen since the 1960s. Now, in a visually rich and deeply inspiring book, movement leaders and activists distill their wisdom, sharing lessons of what works and what hinders transformative social change. Weaving together interviews with today’s most successful activists–from Bill McKibben and Clayton Thomas Muller to Karen Lewis, Rinku Sen, Ai-jen Poo, Favianna Rodriguez, Rea Carey, Gaby Pacheco, Patrice Collins, and more–with narrative recountings of strategies and campaigns alongside full-color photos and an afterword by Antonia Darder, social activist Greg Jobin-Leeds joins forces with AgitArte, an organization of artists and organizers, to document the stories, philosophy, tactics, and art of today’s leading social change movements. Beautifully packaged in a wonderfully affordable paperback edition, When We Fight, We Win! will allow a whole generation of readers to celebrate and benefit from a remarkable decade of activism and reform. — Provided by publisher.

Dr. Ben Carson made headlines with his keynote at the National Prayer Breakfast in February 2013. Standing just a few feet from President Obama, the neurosurgeon offered a common sense critique of liberal government, calling for a return to our historic culture of personal responsibility, free markets, and upward mobility. Now, in this sequel to their #1 New York Times bestseller America the Beautiful, Dr. and Mrs. Carson offer a bold plan to stop the country’s slide into fiscal and moral decay. Avoiding the political correctness of politicians and the animosity of Washington lawyers, Dr. Carson calls for respectful discussion and disagreement, with no subjects off limits. Applying the problem-solving skills he honed as a surgeon, he takes on tough issues such as education, health care, family values, race relations, taxes, charity, and the role of faith in public life. In his journey from poverty to the top of his field, Dr. Carson has lived the American dream. He shows how we can save that dream for our future generations, by restoring a moral, informed citizenry that will support one nation, under God, indivisible. — Provided by publisher.

Based on more than a decade of research, Making a Global Immigrant Neighborhood charts the evolution of Sunset Park–with a densely concentrated working-poor and racially diverse immigrant population–from the late 1960s to its current status as one of New York City’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Tarry Hum shows how processes of globalization, such as shifts in low-wage labor markets and immigration patterns, shaped the neighborhood. She explains why Sunset Park’s future now depends on Asian and Latino immigrant collaborations in advancing common interests in community building, civic engagement, entrepreneurialism, and sustainability planning. She shows, too, how residents’ responses to urban development policies and projects and the capital represented by local institutions and banks foster community activism. Hum pays close attention to the complex social, political, and spatial dynamics that forge a community and create new models of leadership as well as coalitions. The evolution of Sunset Park so astutely depicted in this book suggests new avenues for studying urban change and community development. — Provided by publisher.

The George Gund Foundation imprint in African American studies.

Urban poverty, along with all of its poignant manifestations, is moving from city centers to working-class and industrial suburbs in contemporary America. Nowhere is this more evident than in East St. Louis, Illinois. Once a thriving manufacturing and transportation center, East St. Louis is now known for its unemployment, crime, and collapsing infrastructure. Abandoned in the Heartland takes us into the lives of East St. Louis’s predominantly African American residents to find out what has happened since industry abandoned the city, and jobs, quality schools, and city services disappeared, leaving people isolated and imperiled. Jennifer Hamer introduces men who search for meaning and opportunity in dead-end jobs, women who often take on caretaking responsibilities until well into old age, and parents who have the impossible task of protecting their children in this dangerous, and literally toxic, environment. Illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs showing how the city has changed over time, this book, full of stories of courage and fortitude, offers a powerful vision of the transformed circumstances of life in one American suburb. –Publisher’s website.

Why does inequality have such a hold on American society and public policy? And what can we, as citizens, do about it? Inequality in America takes an in-depth look at individual-level and systemic inequality, focusing in particular on race, poverty, and gender, across a wide range of issues from housing and education to crime, employment and health. Caliendo shows how individual-level prejudice and systemic inequality are interrelated, how individual beliefs and attitudes can affect public opinion and lawmakers’ policy solutions and how systemic barriers to advancement as a result of these policies then contribute to individual perceptions, creating a cycle of disadvantage and advantage that can be difficult to break, though not impossible. Feature boxes throughout the book offer insight into key public figures who have worked to combat inequality and suggestions for individual action. Concise and written in an accessible manner, Inequality in America paves the way for students to think critically about the effects of the attitudes, behaviors and structures of inequality — Provided by publisher.
