Description based on online resource title from title screen (viewed March 29, 2016)

Originally released as a motion picture in 2013.

Documents the untold story of Mexican-American school children who challenged discrimination in Texas schools in the 1950s and changed the face of education in the Southwest. Eight elementary-school students testified in a federal court case in 1956 to end the discriminatory practice (Hernandez et al. v. Driscoll Consolidated Independent School District), one of the first post-Brown desegregation court cases to be litigated. The film features the personal accounts of most of those who were at the center of the court case.

In recent years, students, scholars, and lay readers of the Bible have been increasingly drawn to the book of Ruth. Delving deeply into the complicated nature of its characters’ relationships, Jeremy Schipper encourages readers to consider the roles that categories of difference involving gender, disability, household status, ethnicity, and sexual desire play throughout the text. The fresh translation of the deceptively simply book is more literal and less idiosyncratic than its predecessors. Combining the traditional strengths of the Anchor Yale Bible series with the latest research in biblical scholarship, Schipper’s much-needed volume will succeed Edward F. Cambell’s 1975 edition as the go-to commentary for years to come — Provided by publisher.

Rev. ed. of: Harper’s Bible commentary. 1988.

Includes bibliographical references.

Introduction — Pt. 1. The Biblical story, Genesis-Esther — Pt. 2. Psalms and Wisdom — Pt. 3. The prophetic books — Pt. 4. The Apocrypha — Pt. 5. Books in the form of narrative (The Gospels and Acts) — Pt. 6. Books in the form of letters (The Pauline letters and the general letters to the churches).

The Commentary covers all of the Hebrew Bible, as well as the books of the Apocrypha and those of the New Testament, and thus addresses the biblical canons of Judaism, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. Its innovative format covers the books of the Bible in three ways: general essays setting the literary, cultural, and historical context for the entire Bible articles introducing major sections of the Bible commentaries on the individual books themselves.

The time has come to tell the entire story of the creation of The Saint John’s Bible, written and illustrated entirely by hand. This completely updated and expanded edition of Illuminating the Word devotes a separate chapter to each of the Bible’s seven volumes. Readers get a behind-the-scenes tour of the creation of each volume, with a fascinating window into the activities, challenges, and struggles at Donald Jackson’s Scriptorium in Wales. We can practically watch, through the eyes of every artist and calligrapher who participated in the project, the Bible’s stunning illuminations move from conception to completion. This edition also includes a completely new chapter on the scripts used in The Saint John’s Bible that will fascinate calligraphers and lovers of the art. Still another new chapter details the production of the Heritage Edition, a high-quality, fine-art facsimile of the original that makes The Saint John’s Bible available to a wider audience than the singular manuscript.–Publisher website.
