As the roaring twenties turned into the depressed thirties, southern farmers, far removed from the urban prosperity Americans had enjoyed during the 1920s heyday, found already difficult farming conditions greatly intensified by the onset of the Great Depression. Agricultural incompetence plagued the rural South through the misuse of land, depletion of natural resources, and a system of single-crop farming that failed to adequately provide for growing families on small farms, especially in the cotton-producing Southeast. Poverty and desperation came to define the farming communities of the rural South, both in reality and in Americans’ collective conscious. In The Farm Security Administration and Rural Rehabilitation in the South, Charles Kenneth Roberts traces the administrative and political history of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and reconciles the administration’s goals with Franklin D. Roosevelt’s overall vision for the New Deal. Roberts takes a grassroots approach to dissecting the FSA’s history. While other studies have focused on FSA photography or community building, or even policy making in terms of top-down government directives, Roberts focuses on the people and state governments who faced an immediate need to aid southern farmers within their own borders and to boost their states’ crumbling agricultural economic bases. Roberts focuses on rural rehabilitation as a key aspect of the FSA and defines the agency’s legacy not in terms of its failures but rather in terms of an idealistic program whose modest successes were ultimately too few to effect real change for southern farmers. Though Roosevelt failed to adequately recognize the plight of the southern farmer and political infighting hindered many of the administration’s goals, the creation of the FSA stands as one of the first efforts to provide sustained relief to struggling southern farmers. In light of other federal programs of the era, the FSA may seem like a mere footnote to the New Deal outside of its small but revered photography p

This manuscript examines the Farm Security Administration’s political and administrative history and assesses the ideology of the institution against the overall goals of the New Deal. Roberts argues that the FSA’s operating procedure in the rural south was woefully inadequate, stemming from a misunderstanding of rural poverty from leading New Dealers, a bogged-down bureaucracy that offered contradictory advice to southern farmers, and ineffective on-the-ground efforts by FSA agents — Provided by publisher.

Casus belli, 1890-1911: The great West Virginia coal rush The miners’ angel Frank Keeney’s valley A spirit of bitter war — The first mine war, 1912-1918: The Lord has been on our side The iron hand Let the scales of justice fall A new era of freedom — The second mine war, 1919-1921: A new recklessness To serve the masses without fear Situation absolutely beyond control There can be no peace in West Virginia Gather across the river Time to lay down the Bible and pick up the rifle — The Peace, 1922-1933: Americanizing West Virginia A people made of steel More freedom than I ever had.

From before the dawn of the 20th century until the arrival of the New Deal, one of the most protracted and deadly labor struggles in American history was waged in West Virginia. On one side were powerful corporations whose millions bought armed guards and political influence. On the other side were 50,000 mine workers, the nation’s largest labor union, and the legendary miners’ angel, Mother Jones. The fight for unionization and civil rights sparked a political crisis verging on civil war that stretched from the creeks and hollows to the courts and the US Senate. In The Devil is Here in These Hills, celebrated labor historian James Green tells the story of West Virginia and coal like never before.

The world’s population is expected to grow by about 2.2 billion people between now and the year 2020. There is no doubt that feeding these extra mouths represents the principal challenge currently facing the global system of agricultural production and trade. Population and Food examines recent trends in food production and assesses the prospects for feeding humanity up to the twenty-first century. Synthesizing a mass of statistical data and drawing on case material from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, North America and the Middle East, the book suggests that food production in most world regions has kept ahead of population growth. Considering likely future trends in climate, land resources, water availability, trading patterns, farm inputs and technological innovation, the author argues that there should be no insurmountable problems in meeting the world’s food demand to the year 2020 and questions the current pessimism voiced about future food prospects.
