  • A biographical account of the Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt, with a discussion of his published organ works and an analysis of opp. 7, 50, 69, 84, 96, and 123. Born in Kristiania (now Oslo), educated at the Oslo Conservatory, Nystedt served as cantor and organist at the Oslo Cathedral from 1933 to 1966. He co-founded Det Norske Solistkor (the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir) in 1950. The author, an organist, met the Nystedt when Nystedt came to Augsburg College as composer-in-residence in 1969, the year before his op. 37, Fantasia trionfale, was published. Section one of this thesis discusses Nystedt’s musical background, his compositional genres, his life work, and how he expresses his deep religious faith in virtually all his music. Section two is a general discussion of Nystedt’s style of organ composition. Section three is an analysis of six of his organ works transcriptions of these works are provided.
