- This video explores the elements of 17th century Baroque dance, charting the historical preservation of dance, from the academic page to its transformation into a vibrant performance. For this we can thank France’s Louis XIV. An excellent dancer, he ordered the invention of a notation system for dance to teach, codify, and spread this art. This film examines one dance, Folies d’Espagne, selected because it features short highly expressive variations–each with its own temperament–to inspire the choreography. During the course of this video, the creative process of researching, reconstructing, re-creating, and performing a Baroque dance is fully explored. Includes full performances of Pecourt & Feuillet’s Les folies d’Espagne pour homme (1704) and Feuillet’s Les folies d’Espagne pour femme (1700), both attempting to be as historically accurate as possible.
